However, being able to put forth the changing position of women during the transition from the classical period to the modern period chiefly with the help of comparative history method will be better understood by approaching together with social and economic transitions. The purpose of this study is to explain how the position of the women in Ottoman Rumelia, an important part of Ottoman Empire since her foundation, changed from the classical period to the modern period. Being able to state the changing position of women in Ottoman Rumelia will shed light for a part of Ottoman modernization reverberated in social life. In Rumelia, as throughout the empire territory, women’s positions are dissimilar in rural and urban areas. In the classical period, agriculture and livestock’s being prominent added to women’s position. Social life of women living in the countryside was freer and their family position was strong due to their contribution to economic life. In the urban, on the other hand, women’s life standards were better and they had more social opportunities. However, the possibility of a woman living in urban to find a job was lower compared to a woman living in the countryside. With the advancements of 19th century, the general position of Rumelian women also changed. Especially, urban women’s economic opportunities increased. Increased factory production in Rumelia, economic developments and male labour force’s less contribution to the production due to wars provided women to take an active role in economic life. Women’s social position prospered as they became economically stronger.</p>}, number={1}, journal={Kadın/Woman 2000, Journal for Women’s Studies}, author={Tütüncü, Gülsüm and Ünal, Neslihan}, year={2017}, month={Oct.}, pages={63–83} }
